EPoS software, the importance of compatibility

Why is it important to ensure that the software that you’re using is fully compatible the hardware with the hardware, surely they’re just PC’s right?

Yes and no, it is true that almost all modern touchscreen terminals are PC based but they’re all bespoke units built by various manufacturers incorporating devices and features that they feel will make them stand out from the crowd which is brilliant but if the software you’ve purchased isn’t fully compatible with these features then you’re not going to be able to make the best use of them!

What sort of things should I be looking out for?

The method of firing the cash drawer is probably more important than anything. Cash drawers can be fired from the receipt printer and a lot of software employs this method. However, almost all touch screen epos terminals have built-in cash drawer ports that software will usually need changes made to make use of this. Firing directly from the terminal is important because it makes for a much more reliable system, printers have moving parts and so do fail, this can be an inconvenience that rapidly becomes a major panic if your cash drawer stops opening too!

EPoS hardware comes with a whole array of peripherals including; ibutton readers for cashier logging on, card readers, fingerprint readers a plethora of customer displays of varying shapes and sizes. It is important to check that the software you are using is not only compatible with the equipment that is installed with, but is also compatible with some of the devices you may like to own in the future!

The resolution of the display is probably something that you might not consider to be important, but because of the way that you will interact with your touchscreen till – i.e. pressing on-screen buttons with your fingers – then it is quite common that they have fixed areas where things can be used and appear. Touchscreen tills come with all sorts of size and shape screens so it is important to choose software that not only works correctly on the size screen your buying but also one that might be flexible enough so that it can still work correctly if you chose to change hardware a few years down the line.

CPU and RAM performance are also a consideration though less so today. For example, ICRTouch TouchPoint is designed to understand the limitations of the hardware that it is installed on and to ensure that even if it is running on a slow cpu with limited ram that it responds and performs instantly.

Will TouchPoint be compatible with all my hardware needs?

ICRTouch software products are sold by more till dealerships than any other epos software available, with so much choice when it comes to touch screen epos terminals it comes as little surprise that very few installers supply systems use the exactly the same configuration of hardware! Because we are the most popular choice of epos in this country it means that we are in the fortunate enough position that all the hardware manufacturers send us their latest offerings, often before they even appear on the marketplace. And because we are one of the longest standing suppliers of touch screen epos software it means that we have more compatibility with more touch screen terminals than any other epos software supplier. For example, ICRTouch TouchPoint is every bit as compatible with the Casio QT7000 released all the way back in 1998 as it is with Panasonic’s latest offering the JS-960 released in 2012.

Each new machine that is sent to us is subjected to a 10 point integration and testing program to ensure that ICRTouch TouchPoint is 100% compatible with that product; which may involve ICRTouch making software changes to create that support. The culmination of the process results in a comprehensive setup guide that is shared with our resellers to ensure that the system that ends up with the end customer is the best possible system.

ICRTouch has been tested to be fully compatible with the following touchscreen EPoS terminals.

Please note that although every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of this list, due to the shear numbers of different hardware types that we have support for along with the fact that manufacturers sometimes change specification it is your responsibility to check with your reseller that ICRTouch products are compatible with your specific set of hardware. This list is unlikely to be complete as some hardware with similar model numbers share drivers and configuration with other hardware, again if your product is not listed and your are interested in using it with ICRTouch software then please ask your reseller for advice.
